The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is coming to in Hermitage Pennsylvania and ushers in the all-new third generation of the nameplate. The Sequoia remains a full-size three-row SUV that shares its platform with the Tundra pickup truck, but the are some notable updates, including a more modern and aggressive exterior aesthetic, a cabin that is much more upscale, better towing capabilities, better off-road capabilities and a standard hybrid powertrain for the first time ever. The team at Diehl Toyota of Hermitage is also excited to announce new brand incentives that make it even easier to lease or own.
The new exterior design is perhaps the most exciting aspect of this 2023 Toyota Sequoia review. The Sequoia has always been a good-looking SUV, but the previous model was using a design that was introduced more than a decade ago. The new Sequoia not only looks more modern but has a much more rugged appearance that reflects the truck underpinnings upon which is based. All models have four doors and a rear liftgate. A power liftgate and a hands-free liftgate are available. Eighteen-inch aluminum-alloy wheels are standard equipment, and wheels as large as 20 inches are available.
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia will be available in eight- and seven-passenger configurations. The main difference between the two layouts is captain’s chairs in the second row as opposed to a bench seat. While the final specifications were not yet available at the time of this writing, we do know that the new Sequoia is more spacious than the outgoing generation. In that model, headroom ranges from 34.8 inches in the front row to 34.9 inches in the second row to 34.5 inches in the third row. Front-, second- and third-row legroom are 42.5, 40.9 and 35.3 inches, respectively. The dedicated cargo space is 18.9 cubic feet, and as much as 66.6 and 120.1 cubic feet are available with the rear seats folded.
The Sequoia has always been based on the Tundra pickup truck, but in the past, it used a modified version of the platform. With this generation, it uses the same platform. This is the same platform not only used by the Tundra but the Land Cruiser and Lexus LX600. It now features a fully boxed frame and an independent front suspension. Rear-wheel drive is standard. Part-time four-wheel drive is available with the SR5 trim level and up. The TRD Pro, which is an off-road-oriented model, includes four-wheel drive as standard equipment. All 4×4 models have a two-speed transfer case.
The powertrain is another exciting section of this 2023 Toyota Sequoia review because this aspect of the vehicle is completely new for this next generation. All Sequoia models will have a twin-turbo V6 hybrid i-FORCE MAX powertrain that generates 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. It also features a 10-speed automatic transmission, and an electric motor generator is positioned between that transmission and the twin-turbo engine. Trailering equipment is available and included with certain trim levels. With that proper equipment, your Sequoia can tow as much as 9,000 pounds, which is a 22% increase over the previous generation.
The infotainment system is completely new, and all models now have a 14-inch touchscreen with many bells and whistles, including voice control, wireless Android Auto, wireless Apple CarPlay and in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot. All of the driver-assistance technologies available for the Sequoia are standard across the board. This suite includes a rearview monitor, adaptive cruise control, frontal collision detection with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist. There will be some options, such as being able to upgrade the rearview monitor with a 360-degree camera. The Sequoia also has trailering-assistance tech that is included with trailering package.
