Toyota was innovating with the Toyota 4Runner long before the American consumer fell in love with small and midsize SUVs. It is easy to take the 4Runner for granted in the current marketplace, but Toyota helped to establish modern consumer expectations in this segment. Another interesting aspect of the 4Runner is that Toyota remains committed to it being a true SUV. Many other midsize SUVs are SUVs in name only and bear little resemblance to the rugged vehicles introduced in the 1980s. An example of that kind of SUV is the popular Edge from Ford, and in the following review, we will compare the 2022 Toyota 4Runner vs 2022 Ford Edge and see what Toyota and Ford do differently.
The first notable difference when it comes to the 2022 Toyota 4Runner and the 2022 Ford Edge is the exterior design. The 4Runner boasts a rugged and boxy design that makes it look like a truck. Ford, on the other hand, opts for the more car-like design that is common amidst the current crop of crossovers. The vehicles are not dramatically difference in size, however. The 4Runner has a 109.8-inch wheelbase and a 9.0-inch minimum ground clearance. It measures 190.7 inches in length—about 15.9 feet—75.8 inches wide and 71.5 inches tall. The Edge has a 112.2-inch wheelbase and an 8.0-inch minimum ground clearance. It measures 188.8 inches in length, 75.9 inches wide and 68.3 inches tall. The height of the 4Runner, its ground clearance and its taller rider positioning are all important differences in its favor.
Both of these are five-passenger vehicles. The 4Runner available at Diehl Toyota of Hermitage provides about 39 inches of front headroom, 42 inches of front legroom and 33 inches of second-row legroom. The 2022 Ford Edge affords approximately 40, 43 and 41 inches, respectively. Toyota offers among the most cargo space in the class at more than 47 cubic feet dedicated and more than 89 cubic feet overall. Ford provides about 39 cubic feet of dedicated space and about 73 cubic feet overall. Toyota offers one of the best base packages in the class with niceties like a leather-wrapped steering and functional upgrades like a 120-volt power outlet in the cargo area, and while Ford does offer similar equipment overall, most of it is included standard earlier in the 4Runner lineup.
Powertrains are another interesting aspect of comparing the 2022 Toyota 4Runner vs 2022 Ford Edge. All 4Runner models available through our location serving Hermitage Hubbard Warren New Castle have a 4.0-liter V6 that makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque and is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. Depending on the trim level, you have the choice of rear-wheel drive, part-time four-wheel drive and full-time four-wheel drive. Properly equipped, a 4Runner can tow 5,000 pounds. Most Edge models have 250-hp turbo four-cylinder with an eight-speed. This engine can tow 1,500 pounds. The Edge ST is a performance model with a 335-hp turbo V6 that can tow 3,500 pounds. Those who intend to take their vehicle off-road should note that the 4Runner TRD models have mechanical enhancements, such as an off-road suspension, locking rear differential and so forth.
Both models have a color HD touchscreen with Android and Apple device integration and a rearview camera system. Both come with a suite of standard driver-assistance tech. Traffic-adaptive cruise control is a popular option and comes standard with the 4Runner. It is available with the 2022 Ford Edge but only as part of an optional driver-assistance add-on package. Outside of integrated navigation, all of the driver assists that Toyota offers are included in that base package. If you are interested in taking your SUV off-road, then there really is not much of a comparison. The Edge is all-wheel drive, but Toyota offers a number of advanced technologies for off-roading, such as driver-selectable traction modes and the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, which improves articulation.
